Type 98 Ke-ni
Japonci začali s vylepšováním těžké techniky až celkem pozdě. Type 98 Ke-ni je vylepšením svého předchůdce Type 95 Ha-go. Mnoho zlepšení se však nedočkal. Dělo zůstalo stejné a navíc mu byl odmontován jeden kulomet Type 97 MG ráže 7mm.
Tento první model typu Ke-ni (též známý pod názvem Chi-ni) byl v Japonském císařství navrhnut v roce 1938 panem Hinem Jidoshy Kogyem. První prototyp byl zkostruován v roce 1939 v Hino Motors. Do výroby a následně do služeb Imperiální japonské armády se dostal až v letech 1941-1943. Zakázku získaly dvě firmy: Hino Motors a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Celkem z výrobních pásů sjelo 104 kusů. Po roce 1943 se od výroby upustilo, protože japonský těžký průmysl zaměřil raději na stvabu lodí než tanků.
Tank měl nahradit zastaralé Type 95, ale díky nízkému počtu se tomu tak nestalo. Type 98 Ke-ni byl nasazen proti Národní revoluční armádě Čínské republiky. Stroj byl poháněný 130hp (horse power = koňská síla) a dojezdem kolem 160km. Ke-ni měl tři modifikace. Jednou z nich je Type 98 Ke-ni Otsu, jehož konstrukce byla ovlivněna ruským lehkým tankem BT-7. Celkem byl vyroben jeden prototyp.
